Adjective
An adjective is a word that describes a noun.
Example: That rose is pretty.
In this sentence, the adjective “pretty” describes the rose.
An adjective can be used to compare nouns.
Example: That rose is prettier than the daisy.
This sentence compares a rose to a daisy by adding –ier to the end of “pretty.”
Example: That is the prettiest rose I have ever seen.
This sentence compares a rose to all other roses by adding an –est to the end of “pretty.”
Adverb
An adverb is a word that describes a verb, or an action. Many adverbs end with an -ly.
Example: Paul ran slowly toward the goal.
In this sentence, the adverb “slowly” describes how Paul ran.
An adverb can be used to compare verbs.
Example: Paul ran more slowly than Joe did.
This sentence describes how Paul ran compared to how Joe ran by adding “more” before the word “slowly.”
Example: Paul ran the slowest of all his teammates.
This sentence describes how slow Paul ran compared to the rest of his teammates by adding –est after the word “slow.”
