Misplaced Modifier
A misplaced modifier is a modifier that is incorrectly separated from the word or words that it describes. The modifier should be placed as close as possible to the word or words it describes.
Example:
The young girl was walking a dog in a purple sweater.
Corrected Sentence:
The young girl in a purple sweater was walking a dog.
Dangling Modifier
A modifier that starts a sentence must be followed right away by the word it describes. Otherwise, the modifier is dangling and gives the sentence a meaning that was not intended.
Example:
Running in the morning without breakfast, weakness was felt.
Corrected Sentence:
Running in the morning without breakfast, I felt weakness.
