Bold Italics UnderlinePrint features include
bold type,
italicized type, and
underlining. They may also include
bullet lists and
superscript numbers and symbols. These features draw the reader's attention to important words and ideas in the passage. They may direct them to other parts of the passage for more information, such as
definitions or
pronunciation guides. They may also help show the organization of a passage. For example,
titles and
headings for sections of a text may be in bold type.

Graphic features include
pictures,
captions,
insets,
timelines,
sidebars,
diagrams,
tables,
graphs, and
maps. These types of features help readers
visualize, or picture, information in their minds. They
organize information visually to make it easier to understand.
When reading a text with print and graphic features, ask yourself why the author uses them. Do they help you understand the information? Do they make the information easier to find? Do they point out especially important words or ideas? Do they help you connect different ideas in the text? |
